David Colman is a great character artist, and is good at drawing bears.....however, this book is a collection of hisbear doodles, and not really a how to. I was hoping he would break down his process in pictures, or break down the bear anatomy.
Instead, he gathered up all his bear sketches, and decided to lump them (all 67 pages) in a book.
Great art, but a little disappointed.

Animal Character Design Grizzly Bears is the newest addition to the David Colman art book collection and the work inside is outstanding! This book is the first in what will be a series of smaller books based on the designing of individual animal types. Gracing the cover of this book is a powerhouse oil painting of a grizzly bear teeming with personality that gives a hint of what the contents inside are all about. Not only does David show examples of deft draftsmanship via the pen and pencil, but he has also taken things to the next level by depicting these burly plantigrades in oil paint! The translation of any linear character design into oil paint is rarely seen and difficult to execute but David has excelled in getting his own designs to fit into this rich medium.
All artists will enjoy and benefit from the pages within this book. Aside from the amazing artwork supplied, there are words of wisdom and tips along the way that deal exclusively with the mechanics of design and the importance of drawing. The idea of using one animal for the theme of the book is brilliant and easy to take in. By using the grizzly bear as an example, we are not spread to thin with many animals but instead are allowed to make a "study" of one subject that will supply the "nuts and bolts" of how to proceed with other animals. Focusing on a single subject until it is learned is the way to achieve excellence with design, and David has given us clear evidence of this.
The elaborate use of shapes and forms give these grizzly bears distinction and character found nowhere else. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next line up in the series Tigers!
the book has some beautiful drawings, some nice tips on how to use certain shapes for designing bears, David Colman surely knows his bears. This book is a delight for anyone interested in character design

They had what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. It came as advertised quickly. Would purchase through them again.
My son in law is using the book for reference when carving with his chainsaw. He loves it and uses it often.
I love the designs in this book. However I thought there would be more info about how to break down the grizzly itself. I would have liked an entire section devoted on how to break down the construction of the bear with simple shapes so that you can approach it better when you're drawing from life or video like he suggests. In that section maybe some simple anatomy sketches as well, like something you would see in a animal drawing book.
That's my only problem with this book, hopefully the next one in the series will be better. I did enjoy the tips and wisdom passed on in this book, I found those things to be really helpful. But for a book about designing grizzly bears I would definitely like to see more about construction and anatomy and then move on to how you would caricature it.
I absolutely love this book. It's minimal, and simple but it's full of helpful advice and tips. the illustrations are beautiful and give you a great example of varying the features of your character designs and how they play into a design. I highly recommend this book.
